Brain Fog: Five Causes Worth Ruling Out Before Any Supplement

Last updated: 17 September 2026

"Brain fog" is one of the most-searched phrases in this category and one of the least useful. It is a description of an experience, not a diagnosis, and it sits downstream of a long list of causes — most of which a capsule will not touch.

We sell a cognitive supplement. We would still rather you worked through this list first, because a customer who buys Mind Honey instead of fixing a genuine cause has wasted their money and their time.

1. Sleep, which is not a tie with anything else

Sleep is not one item on this list among equals. It is the single largest lever on how clearly you think, and no supplement in existence competes with a consistent seven to nine hours. If you are running on five, that is the finding, and nothing else on this page matters until it changes.

Worth checking too: whether your sleep is broken rather than short. Untreated sleep apnoea produces exactly the cluster of symptoms people describe as brain fog, and it is a medical issue with a medical fix.

2. Dehydration and what you eat

Mild dehydration measurably affects attention and short-term memory, and most people are mildly dehydrated by mid-afternoon without noticing. Blood sugar swings from a carbohydrate-heavy lunch do something similar. Both are cheap to test: a week of water and a lunch with protein in it will tell you more than any supplement trial.

3. Medication

A long list of common prescriptions list cognitive side effects — some antihistamines, some blood pressure medicines, sleep aids, several psychiatric medications. If your fog started within a few weeks of a new prescription or a dose change, that is the first place to look, and it is a conversation with the prescriber rather than a reason to stop taking anything.

4. Thyroid, B12 and iron

Three common, testable, treatable causes that produce exactly this presentation. A GP can check all three with one blood draw. If one of them is the cause, treating it works far better than anything sold over the counter, and a supplement in the meantime is a distraction.

5. Stress, low mood and the aftermath of illness

Sustained stress and low mood both degrade working memory and attention, and post-viral fog is now well documented. These are real physiological states, not a failure of effort, and they respond to being addressed directly.

Where the effort is best spent first

Yes, our own product is the smallest bar. That is the honest ordering, and a supplement works best on top of the others rather than instead of them.

When it is not brain fog at all

See a doctor rather than buying anything if the change is sudden, if it is getting worse, if other people have noticed before you did, or if it affects language, navigation or personality rather than just concentration. Those are different signals with different causes, several of which are time-sensitive.

Where a supplement fits

After the list above, not instead of it. Mind Honey is designed as daily support on top of a routine that already has sleep, food and water roughly in order — which is also why it is judged over 8 to 12 weeks rather than over a weekend.
